If you want to create a unique logo for your brand, there is no better place to do so than by researching existing logos. By researching successful brands and their logos, you can better understand what elements and themes can be utilized to create a unique logo of your own.

Instagram, a photo and video sharing app, has a logo that is recognized by millions, so let’s take a look at how the logo came to be and why it is successful in the first place. Once you are done going through this blog, you will have several ideas that can be incorporated into your logo design to create an instantly recognizable brand.

Instagram’s History

Mike Kreiger and Kevin Systrom are the brains behind Instagram. Initially, Mike and Kevin created an app called Burbn in 2010, a check-in app, but later, the focus was shifted towards photo sharing. After getting seed funding of $500,000 from Andreessen Horowitz and Baseline Ventures, Kevin pursued his passion for creating the ultimate photo-sharing app.

To help users find photos with ease, Instagram introduced a handy feature referred to as ‘hashtag’ in 2011. Users were encouraged to use specific hashtags to prevent general tagging. By 2011, Benchmark Capital valued Instagram at $25 million, because of which Instagram gained a total of $7 million investments from Adam D’Angelo, Chris Sacca, and Jack Dorsey.

In June 2012, Instagram launched another feature called ‘Explore’. This feature displayed trending tags, popular photos and even searched for locations. In November of the same year, ‘Website Profile’ was launched, allowing users to see other users’ feeds via a web browser.

Android users got their first feel of the app in April 2012. Within 24 hours, Instagram was downloaded over a million times, which attracted Facebook’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook bought out Instagram for a staggering $1 billion in stock and cash. While the deal encountered a couple of issues, they were taken care of by September 6, 2012.

Instagram’s Logo Evolution

The original Instagram logo incorporated a Polaroid camera since the app was a photo-sharing app. The same year a new logo was introduced that took great inspiration from the Bell & Howell camera, and it was used till 2016. The third logo design was not well received, as users complained it was a simple outline design of the previous logo. The highly criticized logo had a minimalist design and lacked the rainbow stripes from before. Even though the logo was not well received, it remains unchanged to date.

How is Instagram Viewed Today?

Instagram is now much more than a photo-sharing app; it is now a combination of social media networking, photo/video sharing, and advertising. It has grown immensely popular amongst advertisers and celebrities.

The new Instagram logo lost its personality even though it represents the Polaroid camera from the famous logo design from 2011. But then again, the new logo signifies memories, nostalgia, youthfulness, and focus. The new logo represents colorful memories, which was the original intent of the app in the first place.
